Chair Mary McGee
I’m Mary L. McGee, the Chair of the Disability Caucus of the State Central Committee of the Iowa Democratic Party. The delegates at the State Convention elected Carol and me to our offices in June.
I’m a private practice attorney in Des Moines. I’m also the Third Congressional District Affirmative Action Chair of the Democratic Party and I’m on the Access Advisory Board of the City of Des Moines.
The Disability Caucus of the Iowa Democratic Party has completed numerous projects, including but not limited to compiling an ADAAG checklist for use by planners to insure accessibility at all Party events and presenting a Disability Simulation Show to candidates, staff, and volunteers to make them aware of the needs of voters who have disabilities.
These are reasons why you should join the Disability Caucus:
1. Make your opinion count within the Party and in the government.
2. Stay current on political and policymaking information and issues.
3. Interact with other people who have similar perspectives.
4. Share your special talents.
5. Make a strong grassroots organization stronger.
These are the goals of the Disability Caucus:
1. Eliminate ignorance about disabilities in the Iowa Democratic Party.
2. Increase the number of Democratic activists who have disabilities.
3. Regularly practice oversight to insure accessibility in voting places.
4. Guarantee that disabled voters exercise their right to vote absentee, with assistance, or in person at their polling places.
5. Elect Democrats to public offices.
6. Continuously work closely with the other caucuses to make the Party stronger.
7. Obtain position statements from all candidates for public office reflecting their views on issues that have an impact on people who have disabilities.
8. Create a unified voting group to which candidates and elected officials will listen.
