Iowa Republicans have made their priorities very clear this session, unfortunately a serious commitment to education didn’t make the cut.
Now as the session begins to wrap up, they’re maintaining that that zero percent allowable growth for education – for the first time in the state’s history – is better for schools than two percent allowable growth. As usual, the Republican “Zero is Better” campaign neglects to mention the true impact of zero percent allowable growth.
Their rejection of the Democratic compromise of two percent allowable growth will be devastating for education in Iowa. Not only will more than 1,500 teachers be laid off, Iowa families will face a $70 million property tax increase statewide. That’s not leadership or a commitment to education.

It’s time for Republicans to be honest with voters. Zero percent isn’t better, it’s higher taxes to pay less teachers. Their math doesn’t add up.
