IDP Statement on Resignation of Branstad Appointee Mariannette Miller-Meeks

Branstad Public Health Director abruptly resign in the aftermath of spreading misinformation about Iowans

DES MOINES – Dr. Mariannette Miller-Meeks resigned today as Terry Branstad’s Director of Public Health less than two days after the Iowa Democratic Party called her out for making false and misleading statements regarding people on food stamps.

“Mariannette Miller-Meeks’ resignation is past due,” said IDP Chair Scot Brennan.  “She has used the office of public health for a political agenda only Michele Bachmann and the Tea Party could love – demonizing working families in need with blatantly false information about Iowans, trafficked on the Internet by a radical Tea Party fringe.  This is just the latest in Miller-Meeks’ dangerous Tea Party agenda that includes support for privatizing Social Security – putting seniors’ hard-earned retirement at risk – and is one more sign that Terry Branstad simply cannot manage state government. Miller-Meeks should be ashamed and apologize to Iowa’s hard-working families.”

Miller-Meeks claimed at a public forum last year that the top purchased item by folks on SNAP assistance in Iowa was Mountain Dew, which was not true.  When pressed on the subject, Miller-Meeks claimed that she found it on the internet but couldn’t remember where.
