Iowans Still Don’t Know Where Governor Branstad Stands on the Shutdown

Des Moines – On his weekly press conference call this morning, Governor Terry Branstad said he won’t comment on the GOP tactic of using a budget resolution to stall the opening of the Health Insurance Marketplace tomorrow.  Not only is Governor Branstad downplaying the impact of a federal government shutdown, but he has shown no sign of leadership in refusing to speak up on what he will do to protect Iowans while his party continues their squabbling.

“Terry Branstad has not shown one sign of leadership during what could be one of the biggest economic setbacks during his tenor as Governor.  Republicans are so focused on undermining the President and his legislative agenda, they’re willing to devastate the economy and hurt the economic wellbeing of ordinary Americans,” said IDP Chairman Scott Brennan.  “A shutdown could delay military pay, delay financial support for Iowa’s small businesses, and will put 9,000 federal employees out of work across the state.  Terry Branstad would rather bury his head in the sand than stand up to the damage his party plans to cause to our economy.  Since the Governor refuses to address his party’s damage to our state, it’s time for Iowans to elect an engaged governor who will actually lead.”
