DES MOINES – Iowa Democratic Party Chair and State Representative Tyler Olson today issued the following statement in response to comments made by Republican State Sen. Dennis Guth on the Iowa Senate Floor.  This morning, Guth said that homosexuality is a “lie” and repeated the false statement often made by anti-gay advocates that homosexuality causes health and mental problems and shortens the life of LGBT individuals.  You can read more about Guth’s statement here.

STATEMENT FROM IDP CHAIR REP. TYLER OLSON

“As a legislator and Iowan I am disgusted by Senator Guth’s comments.  They are offensive and inaccurate and have no place in the legislature or our state. Unfortunately far too many Republican leaders feel this way and perpetuate these sorts of lies that only serve to discriminate against our gay brothers and sisters.  The Iowa Democratic Party remains committed to full equality for LGBT Iowans. I hope Governor Branstad and other Republican leaders join us as we stand up to the ignorance of individuals like Sen. Guth.”

Help us stand up to this harmful rhetoric, donate today to the Iowa Democratic Party.
