DES MOINES — Speaking to a group of conservative activists on Monday, Iowa Secretary of State Matt Schultz finally told Iowans the truth about why he is pushing so hard for voter ID laws in Iowa:
There are a whole lot of issues that we care about: abortion, gay marriage, a whole lot of social issues we care deeply about. But you have to start caring about Voter ID and election integrity as well, because if you don’t have that, you’ll never be able to make a difference in any other issue you care about. Never. Because they will cheat. (Thinkprogress.com, 4/17/2013)
Schultz may try to tell people that Iowans cheat but the facts speak for themselves. Of the 1.5 million votes cast in the 2012 election, not one Iowan has been convicted of knowingly casting a fraudulent vote.
“Schultz’s statement is clear – the only way right-wing conservatives have a chance of enacting their extreme social agenda is through disenfranchising voters,” said IDP Chair Rep. Tyler Olson. “Matt Schultz is clearly ignoring the duties of his office. The Secretary of State should be interested in one thing – defending the right of Iowans to vote. Unfortunately he is more interested in helping Republicans win. Iowans deserve better than Matt Schultz and Democrats will give them the chance to elect someone better in 2014.”
