Overwhelming Support for Medicaid Expansion, so why is Branstad dragging his feet?
DES MOINES – The Iowa Democratic Party has one thing to say to the Governor – where is your coalition of support for denying 155,000 Iowans health insurance?
In a review of Senate File 71, the proposed Senate legislation that would expand Medicaid to cover an additional 155,000 Iowans who need health insurance, not one organization opposes the legislation while nearly 50 stand on the side of Iowans whose health would improve with access to insurance. In addition, several organizations have publicly stated their support for expanding Medicaid in Iowa.
Meanwhile, New Jersey Governor Chris Christie joined seven other Republican governors yesterday in expanding access to health care in their states.
“The Governor’s position is becoming very, very lonely,” said IDP Chair Tyler Olson. “We have a responsibility as elected officials to stand up for Iowans who don’t have a voice. Governor Branstad is shirking his responsibility and leaving tens of thousands of Iowans out in the cold. His position denying the 60 year old woman who lost her job, is looking for another one, and lives in poverty access to life-saving care is not a value shared by most Iowans. There is clear, broad-based support for expanding health insurance in Iowa but the Governor is too out of touch to see it.”
