Olson Urges Governor to Stop Playing Politics with Iowans’ Health, Accept Funds to Expand Medicaid.
DES MOINES -Iowa Democratic Party Chair Rep. Tyler Olson issued the following statement in advance of Iowa Governor Terry Branstad’s meeting with Health and Health and Human Services Secretary Kathleen Sebelius:
“The Iowa Democratic Party stands united with the thousands of Iowans urging Governor Branstad to stop playing politics with Iowans’ health and accept federal funds to expand Medicaid. This simple action would provide access to health insurance for an additional 150,000 Iowans – many for the first time.
“We all know someone who would have access to preventative and life-saving treatment with this simple action. The 60 year old Iowan who lost her job and lives in poverty while looking for another one or the low income Iowan with or without kids.
“It is time to put partisan politics aside and I hope the Governor keeps an open mind when he meets with Secretary Sebelius later today. If he does, I am confident that he will follow the bipartisan lead of Republican Governors John Kasich of Ohio, Rick Scott of Florida and Jan Brewer of Arizona who are now calling for Medicaid expansion under the Affordable Care Act.
“It’s time to take the health of all Iowans seriously. It’s not only the right thing to do but it’s what Iowans want from their elected leaders.”
