With floodwaters now threatening Ottumwa, Iowans are left asking if Chuck Grassley is aware of the problem.

Last week Grassley showed just how out-of-touch he has become when his office admitted he was unaware of flooding in Des Moines until contacted by reporters. “Whether it’s voting against unemployment benefits or ignoring the immediate threats to the people of Iowa, Senator Grassley has failed this state,” said Iowa Democratic Party Chair Sue Dvorsky.

Over the weekend the Des Moines River reached 18.5 feet in Ottumwa, prompting the National Weather Service to issue a flood warning until further notice and the evacuation of some low-lying areas.

“It’s inexcusable that Senator Grassley was unaware of flood concerns in his state’s capital. Iowans deserve a Senator who takes time to learn about the issues facing the state before they’re contacted by reporters,” Dvorsky said.
