Iowa GOP Must Denounce King’s Comments

Iowa Democratic Party Chair Sue Dvorsky called on Senator Chuck Grassley, Terry Branstad, Matt Strawn and all Iowa Republicans to denounce the statements of Iowa Congressman Steve King.

“Steve King continues to make outrageous statements to put his name in the headlines,” said Dvorsky. “King’s statements reflect an absolute callous disregard for the truth and is an embarrassment to all Iowans. I’m calling on Senator Grassley, Terry Branstad, and Iowa Republicans to join me and the Northern Colorado Tea Party in denouncing Steve King’s irresponsible and divisive comments. Our country faces serious problems that must be addressed by serious people and we have no time for reckless behavior.”

During an interview on the G. Gordon Liddy talk show, King said President Obama has a “default mechanism” that “favors the black person.” King also accused U.S. Attorney General Eric Holder of not pursuing a series of cases because the accused were minorities. These statements have caused the Northern Colorado Tea Party and Congressional candidate Cory Gardner to cancel Rep. King’s scheduled appearances this weekend.

“It’s truly unfortunate that Matt Strawn and other Iowa Republicans haven’t mustered the courage to put him in his place. This is a Congressman that spends more time trying to make the news than working for his constituents. It’s time for Iowa Republicans to make a stand and let Rep. King know this kind of behavior is not going to be tolerated.”

King has made statements in the past that were denounced by the Texas Border Coalition and Sen. John McCain.
